Bangkok is famed for its rooftop bars, and a visit to one of these often high-end venues is a high priority (excuse the pun!) for visitors to Bangkok. They offer the chance of unbeatable views over the Thai capital’s skyline, and some have even attained international fame are being featured in Hollywood hits. Here’s our pick of the Bangkok rooftop bars you should visit if you’re looking for that sky-high experience.

Moon Bar @ The Banyan Tree Bangkok

Up on the 61st floor of Bangkok’s five-star Banyan Tree hotel, Moon Bar is one of the Thai capital’s most well-known rooftop bars. The bar and its connected open-air rooftop restaurant occupy the entire top-floor space, giving you stupendous 360-degree views out over Bangkok’s night-time skyline. This is a great spot to catch the sunset with some of the most scenic sundowners you’ll enjoy anywhere.

Daily, 5pm-1am; Banyan Tree, 21/100 South Sathorn Road (MRT Lumpini); no shorts or flip-flops

Sky Bar @ Lebua

It’s the one that’s world-famous thanks to its cameo in The Hangover 2 – such that it’s now often simply referred to by many as The Hangover Bar – and it’s said to be the world’s highest open-air bar. You’ll find it on the 63rd floor of the State Tower, some 820 feet up in the air on Bangkok’s Silom Road, above the high-end Lebua hotel.

The drink to have here is the tribute to ‘that’ movie, the Hangovertini, created for the Hollywood cast while they were in town filming. Sky Bar is a spot that’s won a position on countless rundowns of the world’s best rooftop bars, and the views are certainly worth coming for – it’s also just steps from the Lebua’s famous sky-high Sirocco restaurant.

Daily, 6pm-1am; Lebua, 1055/42 Silom Road (BTS Surasak); no sportswear, shorts, torn clothes, or flip-flops

Sky Train Jazz Club

This Victory Monument venue is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek take on the typical sky bar concept, yet it’s something of a favourite of ours. The twist is that this trendy bar, home to regular live music sessions and packed with retro-ish paraphernalia, is only five storeys high, and has views not of the Bangkok skyline but of the Sukhumvit line of the BTS Skytrain, which passes by just outside.

Once a relative secret, word is now well and truly out, and you’ll find in-the-know tourists joining expats and locals sharing bottles of whisky and generous plates of Thai and fusion bar snacks – don’t miss the huge, German-influenced pork knuckle.

Daily, 5pm-1am; Soi Rangnam, Phaya Thai Road (BTS Victory Monument)

Above Eleven @ Fraser Suites

This snazzy and popular spot on famous Nana nightlife scene Sukhumvit Soi 11 combines impressive rooftop views with a more serious focus on food than you’ll find at many of the city’s more famous sky bars. In this stylish space up on the 33rd floor of the Fraser Suites, you can tuck into Peruvian-Japanese food that’s also known as Nikkei cuisine – alongside an extensive list of inventive cocktails to complement the impressive views of downtown Bangkok.

Daily, 6pm-2am; 38/8 Sukhumvit Soi 11 (BTS Nana)

Sala Rattanakosin Rooftop Bar

While most of Bangkok’s soaring rooftop bars take in views of the city’s downtown skyline, Sala Rattanakosin is a lower-level – but no less impressive – setup alongside the Chaophraya river in the old town area of Rattanakosin, with a stunning lookout over the famous Wat Arun temple.

The first-floor deck and second-floor restaurant are the place to tuck into a mixed menu of western and Thai dishes, while the lesser known (and consequently far less packed) fifth-floor rooftop bar has a solid list of cocktails and worthy riverside views. And if you’re so transfixed that you can’t face the ride home afterwards, Sala Rattanakosin is perhaps just as well known for its hotel rooms.

Daily, 5.30pm-late; 39 Maharaj Road (Tha Tien river boat pier)
