Where To Go For Breakfast in Bangkok

Published: December 2, 2019

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, then it’s lucky that Bangkok is endowed with countless spots – from cafés and coffee shops to local street for vendors, serving up top-notch ways to kick off your morning in the best way possible. From comforting western classics to a typical Thai breakfast (if this exists), here’s our pick of some of the best places in Bangkok to head for breakfast. Of course you could also consider checking out our Local Breakfast Tour.

The Best Western Breakfast Options in Bangkok

Here we have the best international breakfast options for you include breakfasts options from UK, Australia, USA, Canada, France …..

Sarnies Bangkok

Breakfast at Sarnies Bangkok

Our new favourite breakfast place has a classic Australian menu loaded with Thai and other Asian flavours. After their highly successful original cafe in Singapore they recently opened in Bangkok. They source virtually every ingredient sourced within the country, much of it organic.

From the menu, the breakfast options fall into categories of: Loaded Toast, Eggy Goodness (includes fry-up), and Sarnies (Sandwiches). If you are hungry, check out the “Fry-up” where they add a great Thai twist by including Isaan sausages. Or how about Tom Yum Eggs Benedict. Or perhaps simply stick to their good old Bacon and eggs sandhich which is one of the best we have had!

They also have a reputation for great coffee which they roast themselves.

Breakfast Story

Signature breakfast at Breakfast Story in Bangkok

It’s quite a bold claim that they make “Bangkok’s first and best, all day breakfast restaurant.” However, they definitely are contenders.

Breakfast story focuses on American and Canadian style breakfasts. The menu includes homemade granolas, smoothy bowls, caramelised french toast, full American breakfasts, and lots of options that combine with fluffy pancakes and maple syrup!

In most places it is always worth trying the dish which they put their name to. The “Breakfast Story” is a full breakfast of bacon, eggs, potatoes and of course PANCAKES with maple syrup. Of the more interesting dishes check out the Breakfast Poutine!

For coffee drinkers they specialise in cold brew coffee and they also have a rather attractive option of “bottomless” American style drip coffee.

A relatively new addition to the Bangkok breakfast scene but they have already opened a second branch!

Not Just Another Cup

Breakfast - Not Just Another Cup

Very close to our office in Sathorn, this is one of our regular jaunts and for good reason. More of an all day cafe and brunch place but they have a great range of International breakfast options: Full English, Mexican, Australian, Moroccan, and of course Thai!

Combined with a range of healthy, there is something for everyone.

They also have a 2nd branch in Thong Lo called Tiny Cup Cafe

London Pie

As indicated by the name, London Pie also serves up a range of house-made savoury pies, plus a wide variety of other typically British dishes including breakfast! If it’s a classic English breakfast fry-up that you’re craving, then London Pie is arguably the best place in Bangkok to head. This small but well-run café-restaurant serves up the highly recommended eponymous London Pie Breakfast, as well as the super-size Big Ben Breakfast.

Both are pretty much 100% true to the UK’s authentic fry-up, and come loaded with sausages, bacon, eggs done any way you like, fried tomatoes, toast, and a mug of tea. The Big Ben Breakfast adds hash browns, mushrooms, and baked beans – and, let’s be honest, if you’re going to have a fry-up, you might as well go the whole hog!

Daily, 9am-9pm; Sukhumvit Soi 63 (between Ekkamai Soi 4 and Soi 6; BTS Ekkamai); 099-228-7710; www.londonpiebangkok.com

Roast

Long since a brunch favourite, as well as a trendy and foodie-friendly spot for other mealtimes, Roast has been at the heart of Bangkok’s brunch obsession for just about as long as it has existed. It now has 4 branches in Thonglor, EmQuartier, Central World and Saladaeng. It’s a comparatively pricey spot, but turns out an extensive range of top-quality dishes that attract the crowds.

Expect breakfast and brunch dishes to range from well-executed staples like eggs benedict and a salmon-or-prosciutto-spiked take on a fry-up, to smashed avocado on toast loaded with goat’s cheese, French toast, stacks of pancakes, croque monsieur, and on-trend favourites such as sweetcorn and courgette fritters with avocado salsa. Combine all of that with expertly poured coffee from the same owners’ famed roasters Roots, and you’ve got a winning formula.

Monday to Thursday, 10am-11pm; Friday and Saturday, 9am-11pm; Sunday, 9am-10pm; The Commons, Thonglor Soi 17 (BTS Thonglor); 02-185-2865; www.roastbkk.com

Daily, 10am-10pm; EmQuartier (First Floor, The Helix Quartier; BTS Phrom Phong); 094-176-3870; www.roastbkk.com

Bourbon Street

Another Ekkamai favourite, Bourbon Street is a bright, modern American restaurant that prides itself on serving up the best of the Cajun and Creole cuisine from New Orleans and beyond. For breakfast, expect dishes like New-Orleans-style eggs benedict with crab cake, salmon, or bacon, as well as classic steak and eggs, omelettes, French toast, and less common morning meals like huevos rancheros refried bean tortillas.

Daily, 7am-1am; Sukhumvit Soi 63 (BTS Ekkamai); 02-381-6801; www.bourbonstbkk.com

Café Tartine

Slightly tucked away inside Phloen Chit’s Soi Ruamrudee, Café Tartine serves up a solid selection of simple French breakfast and lunch dishes alongside a bright and cheery Parisian vibe. Leading the pack is an excellent-value weekday morning breakfast deal, where 99 baht grabs you a coffee or hot chocolate, a croissant, and an orange juice.

For a more leisurely affair, pick from a range of French pastries, toast with jams and spreads, omelettes, crêpes, staples like eggs benedict, and bigger dishes like quiche, croque monsieur or madame, sandwiches, and salads – there’s also a full selection of coffee, tea, soft drinks, and boozy delights.

Daily, 7am-7pm; Soi Ruamrudee (BTS Phloen Chit); 02-168-5464; www.cafetartine.net

The Best Local Breakfast in Bangkok

On Lok Yun

One of the most famous old Thai breakfast places is On Lok Yun, which is the main reason we are including it. Not much has changed here in the eight decades or so that it has been operating, and it’s a classic Thai-Chinese-feeling café serving hot and iced coffees and teas, and providing the ideal venue for the old-town neighbourhood’s granddads and uncles to catch up or simply read the newspaper.

The signature dish here is the kanom pang sangkaya, bread topped with Singaporean-Kaya-style custard, but just as popular is On Lok Yun’s Thai-style take on the American breakfast – but honestly it does not match a Western version!

Daily, 5.30am-4pm; 72 Charoenkrung Road; 02-223-9621

Thai street food

Who says what you tuck into for breakfast has to be any different from what you eat the rest of the day? Though dishes like joke (rice porridge) tend to figure prominently in the mornings, in reality Thais differentiate very little between dishes eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner, or just as a snack perfect for this country’s well-known love of grazing.

That means that any of the thousands of streetside food stalls in Bangkok, and elsewhere around the country, are ideal for picking up an equally memorable breakfast dish as you’ll find at any specifically breakfast-oriented joint.

The Hotel Buffet Breakfast Option

Finally, you can’t forget to simply consider sticking to a hotel breakfast or brunch buffet. Most of the top end hotels put on a fantastic spread or international and Thai options. However, our own personal feeling is while it is a nice treat every so often, we would much rather explore a small local place with their own unique dishes and personal touch.
