Bangkok’s Best Hotels for a Staycation

Written by Team Expique
Published: December 13, 2021

In 2020, with borders closed, the concept of a staycation became a trend and a staycation in Bangkok presented endless possibilities and deals. Borders may now be open, but planning a Bangkok staycation is still and exciting option even if only for 1 night. There are endless hotels (and hostels) to choose from in every budget range and style.

The amazing and even crazy staycation deals that were available in the last year may now be more limited, but there are still great options out there. Many of the hotels are offering deals or packages around upcoming holidays and festivals that combine accommodation and special events and dining.

However, choosing the best hotel will open a wide debate. Is it purely about luxury or the experience or is it simply about the best deal?

We asked some local experts to choose their picks for the best Bangkok Staycation hotels under a range of categories. Of course, these recommendations also apply equally to people who are visiting Bangkok.

As tempting as it may be we also hope you not just stay in the hotel and may even explore Bangkok a bit more!

Note regarding COVID-19: While we do try to keep our content up to date, please be aware that due to the impact of COVID-19, restrictions may impact our recommendations, and businesses may temporarily or permanently close. Please double check.

The Best Hotels for a Bangkok Staycation are….

What follows is our list of the best Bangkok staycation hotels.

All prices mentioned are taken from hotels website at time of writing and are subject to change.

Recommendation of The Month: Staycation @ Capella Bangkok

Opened in October 2020 and whilst ultra luxury it has an unpretentious resort feel to it. The hotel is also making an impact on the Bangkok foodie scene with the opening “Côte” by Mauro Colagreco (a three-Michelin star chef).

With 8am check-in and 8pm check-out you can get a full 36 hours there by booking just 1 night!

December 2021: Weekday Escapes packages start at 12,900THB ++/night and include 5,000THB of resort credit – Visit Capella’s website for all their latest offers and staycation packages

Unique Boutique Hotels

For a staycation you might as well stay somewhere different. In this section you will find some of the most unique small hotels in Bangkok, which are sure to be an experience.

The following have all been recommended by our own customers and inspected by us.

Chakrabongse Villas

Old Thai houses at Chakrabongse Villas

Set on the bank of the Chao Phraya River in the heart of Old Bangkok, Chakrabongse Villas was built as a retreat from palace life by Prince Chakrabongse in 1908. His granddaughter still lives in the main house but the grounds and surrounding buildings have become an incredible and intimate boutique hotel.

For the most unique experience we would recommend the River View Suite.

Currently they have many deals, with or without meals. Visit their Facebook Page for all their current promotions

Praya Palazzo

Praya Palazzo is another small boutique hotel by the river with a Royal heritage. In fact, this hotel is only accessible by boat from Phra Atthit Pier. The hotel also has a great Thai restaurant with a real authentic Thai Royal Cuisine menu

We personally, would recommend you spoiling yourself and enjoying the Chao Phraya Suite. Visit their website for all their current promotions

Bangkok Publishing Residence

The former printing house of “Bangkok Weekly” has been lovingly restored into an exclusive bed & breakfast. This boutique heritage hotel even contains its own museum. They call it a “residence” as their focus is on privacy. They have a lovely rooftop with jacuzzi, which to maintain their exclusivity and privacy they reserve for one booking at a time.

Whilst officially their rates start at approx THB 7,000 net, promotions are not all published so we suggest to contact them direct for all their current promotions.

Pure Luxury Bangkok Hotels

The hotels mentioned in this category may come as no surprise as they have all built a reputation as the leading hotels in Bangkok (if not the world)! However, with several new ultra luxury hotels recently opened, there is more options than ever before.

Peninsula Bangkok

The Peninsula Bangkok offers world-class service with great views overlooking the river. Although the hotel has a deserved reputation, the really amazing deals they have been offering, makes it a hotel not to miss. We ourselves checked it out and was overwhelmed by the service and the attention to detail.

The Siam

Pool Villa Courtyard at The Siam Hotel in Bangkok. The perfect staycation

When it comes to luxury boutique hotels, The Siam is the place in Bangkok. While it is a little out of the centre, it is nicely located next to the river and you actually feel you have escaped Bangkok! Designed by the famous hotel designer Bill Bensley, it is a hotel like no other. Combining pure elegance and Thai heritage, yet it feels relaxed and friendly.

This is the perfect staycation hotel for celebrating something with your loved one. All rooms are either suites or villas. The pool villas are incredible but even the basic suites are something special. Plus you get butler service for each room!

The Siam re-opened on December 1 and they are offering “WELCOME BACK BENEFITS” inc 10% discount on all rates and promotions + Complimentary upgrade to the next higher category (subject to availability upon arrival) + Resort Credit of THB 3,000 net per room per stay (Stay period: 1 December 2021 – 31 March 2022 / Book by: 15 December 2021).

Anantara Siam Bangkok

This hotel built its reputation in its previous life as The Four Seasons hotel, but when it re-branded as an Anantara hotel a few years ago it maintained its reputation. The hotel has maintained its high level of excellence but gained a new sense of friendliness. Unlike the other hotels in this category it is based very close to Siam making it a perfect hotel for anyone wanting to combine shopping into their stay.

Plus, one should not forget the excellent range of food outlets and legendary brunches. One could even call it a “gourmet” hotel due to its string focus on food and pop up culinary events.

The Anantara Siam currently has a whole range of packages that often combine dining and accomodation – Visit their website for all their current offers and promotions

The Mandarin Oriental

Known by some as “The Grand Dame”, Bangkok’s most famous hotel and also the first luxury hotel (opened in 1876), can’t be omitted from this list. Not only is it a historic hotel, The Mandarin Oriental has built its reputation based on service excellence and attention to details. Whilst the price (even with promotions) makes it out of reach for most, if you have been dreaming of staying here, then now is the time.

With an amazing range of food and beverage outlets to choose from, having credits or meals included is not a bad thing. These include the 2 Michelin Star “Le Normandie”, and the legendary “Bamboo Bar” which was just nominated as the only bar in Thailand in the World’s Top 50!

If you can’t justify this, you could just settle for afternoon tea!

Affordable 5 Star Hotels in Bangkok

Within this category it honestly is a really tough choice as there are so many great hotels who are all offering a great selection of deals at the moment!

The Shangri La Bangkok

The Shangri La hotel Bangkok combines high quality with an amazing location. Located on the river and next to Saphan Taksin BTS station, this really is the best place to stay if you want access to explore the whole of Bangkok.

That’s said, simple exploring the surrounding areas of Bangrak (with great local food options), The Creative District and Talad Noi make this a great staycation location. It is one of the biggest hotels in Bangkok, but with size comes great facilities.

The hotel has also been known to have some great deals recently and they are still including hotel credit in some of their packages – Visit their website for all their current deals and promotions

Lebua

The Lebua at the iconic State Tower, is a great pick due to the beautiful river view balcony, sky bar and the complimentary cocktail and canapés happy hour and great location to explore older parts of Bangkok.

Rates from THB 3,500++ per night – Visit their website for all their current deals and promotions

Kimpton Maalai

A newcomer which is located within the Sindhorn Compound, conveniently located near to Lumpini Park. Providing spacious room with warm and homey feel. In the centre of Bangkok but with great manicured landscaped garden, and wide selections of food outlets both at the hotel and in the neighbourhood (just 1 minute walk to Velaa Sindhorn Village).

They have a wide selection of suites if you want to splash out, but we personally think their Grand Premium Room is good enough (unless there are a lot of you!)

Rates from THB 7,000++ per night. – Visit their website for all their current staycation offers and promotions

Recommended by Soonie (Blackrice Travel)

One of Bangkok’s trendiest large hotels, and is a great option for a staycation. We love the location as super convenient for exploring the whole of Bangkok, but we are a bit biased as it is in our neighbourhood. With one of the best breakfasts in town that is a reason in itself.

W Bangkok

However, at the moment there have some truly great “pop-uo” offers and if you get lucky it is a real bargin! If you want to spend more you can get a (party) huge 215sqm Extreme Wow suite!

Best deal at the moment (December 2021) is book 2 nights and get 2 nights free – Visit their website for all their current staycation offers and promotions

Great Value Staycations in Bangkok

This category has such a wide range of options and even many 4 star hotels now fall into it! If you are really on a budget you can also check in at one of Bangkok’s many hostels! Reality is most small businesses need your support.

Asai Bangkok Chinatown

This is another new kid in town and the first hotel in the new “Asai” brand by Dusit. The hotel describes itself as a “Lifestyle hotel connecting curious travellers through local experiences”. It is close to the heart of Chinatown and uses this point to promote with concepts of “Unique Gastronomy |Diverging Cultures | Historic Treasures”. With great deals available it is worth a try.

Sindhorn Midtown

This is a great choice for those who want good value for money combined with an urban escape. Perfect if you don’t plan to spend much time in the hotel, but they do also have a great rooftop pool!

Located in the heart of the city and close to many shopping malls and the Langsuan vibe with after dark hangouts. If you have kids there is also a Harborland play centre next door!

The also have a great in-house Thai restaurant in Tr.Eat (sister restaurant of Sanae Chan, Michelin Star award Winner – yet more affordable) and its relaxing pool.

Their staycation deals have been known to start at about THB 1,500 per night (including tax) and while it may be hard to get that deal now, they still have a whole range of packages. If you are a family then their 2 bedroom suites are really great value and they have a package that includes Harborland.

Bonus Staycations: The Newest and Most Luxurious

There are 2 new ultra luxury hotels in town and they are next door to each other. Both are getting much attention!

Four Seasons Bangkok

Next door to Capella is the new Four Seasons, which opened in December 2020. With several new restaurants and bars, it is a destination to check out and we will update more once we have checked it out!

Rates from THB 12,000++ per night (but many packages still include significant hotel credits) – Visit Four Season’s website for all their latest offers and staycation packages

Why Take a Bangkok Staycation?

There Are Some Great Deals!

Practically every single hotel in Bangkok is offering staycation packages at the moment. For some hotels it is purely about offering a low price, whereas others it is all about maintaining their price but including A LOT of add-ons (e.g. early check in / late check out, food credits, spa treatments, experiences…..).

Some hotels have many different and constantly changing packages as they aim to meet the interest of many groups of people. It is best to check direct with the hotel for the latest deals.

For Thai citizens you can take advantage of the governments “We Travel Together” scheme and get 40% of hotel room subsidised PLUS get spending money!

Discover and Dream in Your City

Spending money to sleep in a hotel in the city where you already have a house or condo may seem a waste of money, but there are many reasons why people are staycating.

  • Staycations provide a great opportunity to explore a new part of the city, especially when the city is as big as Bangkok! Now is a perfect time to spend time explore the Chao Phraya River, the historic Rattanakosin area or Chinatown.
  • It is an opportunity to stay in a luxury hotel that you always dreamed of! We are talking the likes of The Siam, The Mandarin Oriental, The Peninsula, or even the New Capella Hotel. While some have great offers others are still very expensive!
  • You can get away for a 1 night stay without spending hours travelling AND you don’t need to spend money on flights.

Our Maybe Just Do a Daycation!

Another word which started trending Post-COVID lockdown was “Daycation“. As hotels looked at how to attract the local residents many have launched day passes where you can use the facilities for the day. Many of the above hotels offer some form of Daycation package and in the more expensive hotels they will sometimes give Food & Beverage credits to the value you pay for one of their Daycations!

But please do not forget

Don’t just stay in the hotel – Explore Beyond The Hotel!
