Spirit of Sanam Luang: 02 October-15 November
This new photo exhibition at Soy Sauce Factory art gallery demonstrates life at Bangkok’s famous ceremonial and recreation ground Sanam Luang, in the city’s old town and just a stone’s throw from the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, in a series of images taken by award-winning photographer Cherdwood Sakolaya. Vegetarian Festival: 12-20 October
It’s that time of year when the yellow flags make a reappearance at the city’s street food stalls, as Thais of Chinese descent – and plenty of other beside them – eat a vegan diet that avoids meat, alcohol and even pungent foods like garlic and onions in pursuit of mental and physical purity.. While stalls around the capital will go veggie, replacing the meat in their dishes with tofu and often toning down the usual level of spice, the Chinatown district of Yaowarat is predictably the focal point for a range of festivities. Meanwhile, if you’re visiting Phuket you can expect to see a series of self-mutilating acts as part of traditional rituals there. Retrospective: 03-31 October
American graffiti artist Alex Monopoly gets his first solo museum exhibition this October at Bangkok’s Museum of Contemporary Art, way out to the north on the way to Don Muang airport. The top-hat wearing artist, who has more recently ventured out into sculpture painting too, will show a variety of his work at the exhibition, where pieces will also be for sale. www.mocabangkok.com
Silom Folks Market: until 02 October
Yet another market to add to your weekend plans – in addition to the weekly walking street that pedestrianises Silom on Sunday afternoons, here comes a market dedicated to more fashion and food stalls than Bangkok has already. This one takes place at the Baan Silom outdoor shopping centre, which also holds a regular vintage car market. Random Thainess: 19 October
Finally, a shout out for our very own event “Random Thainess”. This is the 3rd edition of the event where we invite 6 locals (Thai or Expat) to speak for 6-8 minutes each and share their views on a topic of their choice to do with Thailand, Thai Culture or Thainess. We will also have a charity speaker and at least 50% of the profits will go to the charity. Every event is different and whether you are Thai, and expat or a tourist, hopefully you will learn something new and meet someone interesting.
